The primary function of heat loss

and heat gain calculations is to estimate the capacity that will be required for the heating and cooling components of the air-conditioning systems in order to maintain comfort in the building. These calculations are therefore based on peak load conditions for heating and cooling and correspond to weather conditions that are near the extremes normally encountered (see Chapter 4). A number of load calculation procedures have been developed over the years. Most procedures, even though they differ in some respects, are based on a systematic evaluation of the components of heat loss and heal gain.

Residences and small commercial buildings have heat gains and cooling loads that are dominated by the building envelope (walls, roof, windows, and doors) whereas internal gains from occupants, lights, equipment, and appliances play a significant role and often dominate in commercial buildings.
